Trademarks

This page explains the project's position. It is not legal advice — if your use is commercially significant, ask a lawyer.

The short version

The MIT licence covers this project's code, schemas and metadata. It doesnot cover the logos.

Every mark distributed here belongs to its owner. HDFC Bank owns the HDFC Bank logo; PhonePe owns the PhonePe logo. Nothing about this project transfers, dilutes or licenses those rights, and no contributor here has the standing to grant you permission to use them.

What that means in practice

Reproducing a logo to identify the thing it names is normally fine. That is nominative use, and it is why a comparison table can show competitor logos and why your app can show a bank's mark next to a linked account.

Typical safe uses:

  • Showing a bank's logo beside a user's linked account
  • A payment method picker displaying UPI app icons
  • An account aggregator consent screen naming the FIP
  • Documentation or a comparison table referring to real providers

Typical unsafe uses:

  • Putting a bank's logo on your marketing site in a way that implies partnership
  • Using a mark in your own logo, product name, app icon or domain
  • Suggesting endorsement, affiliation or certification you do not have
  • Modifying a mark and continuing to present it as the brand's

The line is confusion. If a reasonable person could conclude the brand endorses you, you are on the wrong side of it, regardless of what any licence says.

Why the logos are here at all

An interoperable financial system needs its participants to be identifiable. A UPI app that cannot show you which bank you are paying is a worse and less safe product. These marks are included to make software correct and legible, not to trade on their goodwill.

That is also why the project holds a strict sourcing rule: assets come from official brand kits or official properties, never from third-party aggregators and never traced by hand. A distorted logo misrepresents the brand, which serves nobody.

For brand owners

If you own a mark in this dataset and want it changed or removed, open an issue titledtrademark: <brand> on GitHub. Requests are honoured — the asset will be removed without arguing the merits.

Two things worth knowing before you ask:

We would rather host your correct logo than have developers use a wrong one.Removal does not stop your mark appearing in Indian fintech products; it just means the version in circulation is a stale screenshot someone scraped. If your objection is to a specific outdated or distorted asset, sending the current one solves the problem better than removal does.

Metadata is separate from artwork. The SVG can be dropped while the factual record — name, category, IFSC prefix, website — stays, since that is public information. Tell us which you want.
